Printing your own robot might soon be a possibility

The idea that one day humans will have robots to do their every bidding has long enthused geeks, governments and pretty much everyone. Now according to according to a report in BCC, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, (MIT) is working on a project, to ensure that each person can get their own personal little robot. Just how is that possible?

Well, MIT hopes to “make it possible for the average person to design, customise and print a specialised robot in a matter of hours“. The team is working to fast-track the production of robots by means of current 3D printing technology. The project is funded by a $10 million grant from the National Science Foundation.
If this is actually successful then it might just be possible for average people to use a desktop technology that would allow them to design and print a machine within 24 hours.
The MIT news website quotes MIT professor Daniela Rus , who is also the leader of the project and a principal investigator at the MIT Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) as saying “This research envisions a whole new way of thinking about the design and manufacturing of robots, and could have a profound impact on society. We believe that it has the potential to transform manufacturing and to democratize access to robots.”
